A laptop for editing, grading or a long client day is not the same machine as a laptop for email. Before you fall for a finish, run this list. It is the one we use when someone asks us to pick a machine off the shelf.
The screen has to be honest
If you colour photos or video, brightness and colour coverage matter more than a thin bezel. Ask what the panel covers, and look at a photo you already know. If skin tones go orange under the shop lights, they will go orange in a hotel room too.
16GB is the floor
Eight gigabytes will open a browser and a document. It will not hold a timeline, a call and a handful of tabs at once. Sixteen is where we start. Thirty-two if the work is 4K or you keep a lot of apps awake.
Ports you should not have to dongle
At least one full-size USB port, a video output, and charging that does not steal the only USB-C port you needed for a drive. A power station can keep you working in a cabin. It cannot invent a port the laptop left at the factory.
Buy the machine for the afternoon you are tired, not the afternoon you are shopping.
Tell us the software you live in — Premiere, Lightroom, Figma, a trading desk — and we will point at the lightest machine on the bench that will not stutter. Nationwide delivery on orders over $1,000, or collect it in Albuquerque.
