Action cameras worth packing: what we look for in a GoPro

Stabilisation, battery life and mounts — the three things that decide whether an action camera comes home with usable footage.

GoPro action camera

An action camera is only as good as the clip you can watch without feeling seasick. Spec sheets shout about resolution. On a trail, a boat or a job site, three quieter things decide whether the footage is usable.

Stabilisation first

4K that jitters is worse than a steady 2.7K. Horizon lock and a strong in-body stabiliser matter more than another megapixel, especially if the camera is on a helmet or a handlebar rather than a gimbal.

Batteries you can swap

Cold weather and 4K recording eat a battery in under an hour. We prefer bodies that take a spare you can pocket, plus a small power station in the car so the second battery is full before the afternoon run.

Mounts you will actually use

The camera in the box is the easy part. A chest mount, a clamp and a short extension pole cover almost every trip we see. If a kit does not include a way to get the lens off your hand, budget for that before you budget for a second body.

The GoPros we stock are the ones we would hand to a customer who is leaving in the morning and does not want a settings menu between them and the shot. Come in, or message us, and we will set the picture profile before you leave.
